Several prominent hospitalist leaders have been named to Modern Healthcare magazine’s “50 Most Influential Physician Executives and Leaders” for 2016. Among them are Patrick Conway, MD, MSc, MHM, a pediatric hospitalist as well as CMO and deputy administrator for innovation and quality at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS); Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, a hospitalist and the current U.S. Surgeon General; Lynn Massingale, MD, co-founder and executive chairman of the hospitalist staffing firm TeamHealth; and Robert M. Wachter, MD, MHM, a national hospitalist leader, professor, and interim chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and a founder of the hospitalist movement.
Jackson Health System (JHS) hospitalists received the 2016 BAYADA Award for Technological Innovation in Healthcare, Education, and Practice, facilitated by the Drexel University College of Nursing and Health Professionals. The $10,000 award recognized improvement in preventing/decreasing errors and improving outcomes through the HM groups’ “simulation-based procedural instructional curriculum,” according to Joshua D. Lenchus, DO, RPh, SFHM, president of JHS medical staff.
Susan George, MD, SFHM, recently received the Katharine F. Erskine Award from the YWCA in Worcester, Mass. Dr. George served as an internal medicine physician at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester for a total of 20 years and as hospitalist medical director there from 2007 until this year, when she left to go into private practice. Dr. George still teaches at the University of Massachusetts Medical School as an associate professor of medicine. The award is named for Katharine F. Erskine, a former YWCA president and women’s advocate since before the turn of the 20th century.
Alanna Small, MD, was recently named deputy chief of staff for Physician Services at Samuel Simmonds Memorial Hospital in Barrow, Alaska. Prior to this role, Dr. Small served as a hospitalist at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage.

ECI was founded in 1972 to offer emergency medicine in northern Michigan, and it now staffs hospitalist and emergency medicine providers across the country.
Envision Healthcare Holdings, Inc., based in Greenwood Village, Colo., was named one of Fortune magazine’s “World’s Most Admired Companies” for 2016. Envision’s healthcare service portfolio includes EmCare Holdings, Inc., which provides contracted hospitalist services to hospitals across the country.
Envision also announced its planned acquisition of Emergency Physicians Medical Group (EPMG), based in Ann Arbor, Mich., a private emergency and hospital medicine staffing firm serving the Midwestern United States since 1976.
Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City was recently recognized by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for its revolutionary protocols in reducing the venous thromboembolism (VTE) rate in inpatients. Hospitalists at Intermountain use an electronic tool to scan the patient’s electronic medical record on a daily basis. The CDC awarded Intermountain and seven other hospitals nationwide with its HA-VTE Prevention Champion award earlier this year.
iNDIGO Health Partners, a private hospitalist staffing firm based in Traverse City, Mich., received the 2016 Comprehensive Integration Award from the Intelligent Health Association (IHA). The award recognizes iNDIGO for its recent work to streamline hospitalist schedules and ultimately reduce physician burnout. iNDIGO reports a 97.6% retention rate for its providers over a five-year period.

Dr. Howell serves as division director of the Collaborative Inpatient Medicine Service (CIMS) at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center. He is a past president of SHM and currently a senior physician advisor for the society.
Aric Groshong, MD, is the first pediatric hospitalist at CHI Mercy Health Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg, Ore. Dr. Groshong previously served the Roseburg community through his private practice for 21 years. CHI Mercy Health Mercy Medical Center is a 174-bed acute-care hospital serving southwestern Oregon since 1909.

Most recently, Dr. Moriates served as an assistant professor in the hospital medicine division at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Dr. Moriates also serves as the director of implementation initiatives at Costs of Care, a global nonprofit organization focused on delivering better care at a lower cost.

Mary Kathryn Anania, MD, has been appointed as hospitalist medical director at Florida Hospital Flagler in Palm Coast. Dr. Anania previously served as a hospitalist at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach. As Flagler medical director, Dr. Anania will oversee 11 hospitalists.
Zeshan Anwar, MD, is the new medical director of the hospitalist group at Evangelical Community Hospital in Lewisburg, Pa. Before arriving at Evangelical as a hospitalist in 2013, Dr. Anwar served as a hospitalist at Lock Haven Hospital in Linden, Pa., where he was also chair of the quality improvement committee and a physician advisor.
Roberto de la Cruz, MD, has been appointed as chief medical officer for Parkland Health & Hospital System in Dallas. Dr. de la Cruz previously held the position of hospitalist division chief at Parkland, and he served on Parkland’s board of managers from 2011 to 2013. He also is an assistant professor of internal medicine at University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
Janet Meckley, MD, recently was awarded the Paul S. Rhoads, MD, Humanity in Medicine Award by Reid Health in Richmond, Ind. Dr. Meckley served as a hospitalist from 2009 until 2015, when she decided to return to private practice. The Rhoads award recognizes compassionate patient and family care as well as community healthcare involvement.
Deshini Moonesinghe, MD, is the new senior vice president and chief medical officer for the Howard Region of Community Howard Regional Health in Kokomo, Ind. Dr. Moonesinghe spearheaded the foundation of Community Howard’s hospitalist program in 2010, and she currently serves as lead hospitalist of the health system. Dr. Moonesinghe received Community Howard’s Physician of the Year Award in 2014.
Mark V. Williams, MD, MHM, recently was named to the advisory board of The Joint Commission Journal on Quality and Patient Safety. Dr. Williams is a professor and the vice chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. Dr. Williams founded the hospitalist program at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and the academic hospitalist programs at Emory and Northwestern universities. He is a founding editor of the Journal of Hospital Medicine and a past president of SHM.
John Zachem, DO, received the 2015 North Star Award from St. Charles Health System in Bend, Ore. Dr. Zachem led the charge in forming the first hospitalist program at St. Charles in 2006, where he has practiced since. According to the health system, the North Star Award recognizes a local physician who practices “compassionate patient care, professionalism, and a commitment to improving the lives of Central Oregonians.”

ApolloMed Hospitalists, a management group affiliated with the Glendale, Calif.–based Apollo Medical Holdings, Inc., has partnered with Allied Pacific of California IPA, an independent practice association based in Alhambra, Calif. Allied Pacific already manages inpatient admissions at five AHMC Healthcare hospitals in Southern California, plus two others, and ApolloMed Hospitalists will handle staffing physicians at these seven. ApolloMed Hospitalists was founded in 2001.

Moses Taylor Hospital, a 217-bed acute care center in Scranton, Penn., recently opened a brand new pediatric wing that will be staffed by a team of pediatric hospitalists from Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. The new Pediatric Center of Excellence will provide 18 beds for pediatric care 24 hours a day. Moses Taylor Hospital is part of Commonwealth Health, a regional healthcare network in Northeastern Pennsylvania consisting of six hospitals and dozens of post-acute and laboratory centers throughout the region.

Dr. Carlson is a pediatric hospitalist who served as director of the pediatric hospitalist medicine division at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo. Dr. Carlson currently serves as co-chair of the SHM Pediatric Committee, as well as Workforce Taskforce Leader for the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Leadership Committee and chair of the Pediatric Hospital Medicine National Conference Planning Committee.
Howard Epstein, MD, FHM, has been appointed executive vice president and chief medical officer at PreferredOne, a health services and insurance provider based in Golden Valley, Minn.
