Please do not imbed tables, figures, and illustrations within the article. Rather, submit them as separate files. Most tables, figures, and illustrations are redrawn by the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Medical Art and Photography, so we allow submission in a variety of formats. However, it is important that the submitted material be clear and easy to read. Please indicate whether the material is original or based on another source. If it is based on another source, please include the complete reference citation.
Tables
Tables may be submitted in any word processing format such as Word or WordPefect. Copies in PDF format are also acceptable.
Figures
Graphs and Algorithms
As noted above, figures such as graphs, algorithms, and charts will be redrawn. Most formats are acceptable, including PDF, GIF, JPEG, TIFF, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Microsoft PowerPoint. The most important factor is that the images are clear.
Illustrations
Medical illustrations are drawn by staff of the Cleveland Clinic's Center for Medical Art and Photography. Sketches and suggestions can be submitted in a variety of formats, as discussed in the "Figures" section above. Once an article is accepted, CCJM editors will work with the authors to develop and refine illustrations.
Digital and Photographic Images
These instructions apply to patient photographs, photomicrographs, electron micrographs, radiographic images, MRIs, PET images, and ECG and EEG tracings. (Please note that patient images in which the patient can be identified must be accompanied by a signed release from the patient allowing for print and electronic reproduction of his or her image.)
Images will need to be created in the following formats and resolution outlined below. However, lower resolution images may be submitted initially for position only (they will load more quickly on our manuscript submission system). If low-resolution images are submitted, then the high-resolution images must be submitted once the paper is accepted.
Preferred formats: The following formats are preferred for submission of digital files of photographic images: TIFF, Adobe Photoshop, JPEG (use only the maximum-quality compression setting).
Acceptable but not preferred formats: PDF.
Unacceptable formats: Photographs in word processing programs (Microsoft Word or WordPerfect), GIF, web images.
Guidelines for resolution of photographic images: 300 dpi for color or grayscale
Guidelines for color modes: We prefer electronic files in CMYK, RGB, or grayscale (for black-and-white images).
In images with arrows or other labeling, you should submit the labeled image initially. However, after the article is accepted, you will need to submit two electronic originals: one with appropriate labeling and arrows identifying structures and an indication of the top of the image and one clean copy of the image without labels and arrows.
