The American Headache Society and the American Academy of Neurology have issued an updated assessment for acute migraine treatment, with a focus on evidence-based recommendations for medications.
The following classes of drugs are recommended on the basis of efficacy:
• triptans, including almotriptan, eletriptan, frovatriptan, sumatriptan, and zolmitriptan
• ergotamine derivatives, incluing nasal spray and inhaler forms of dihydroergotamine (DHE)
• nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAIDS), including diclofenac and ibuprophen
• combination medications, including simatriptan-naproxen and acetaminophen-aspirin-caffeine
