Updated Patient Fliers Available Now

The SVS Foundation has announced that its patient fliers project is completed, and fliers are now available free to members. Nine vascular topics are addressed in updated fliers, including Carotid Artery Disease, Diabetes, Peripheral Arterial Disease, and more. These were redesigned to be useful in a patient waiting room, or to hand to a patient during an office visit. They are available in both English and Spanish, and can be found on the SVS website here.

Applications are due Feb. 27 for travel scholarships to attend the Vascular Annual Meeting. Available is a resident/medical student award and a diversity medical student award. Recipients are eligible to receive complimentary meeting registration plus a travel scholarship. They also get to participate in the Scholarship Program, including the hugely popular simulation training. Students and residents, please apply. And SVS members, urge the students you know to apply, as well.

The SVS is taking steps to provide more direct resources to our candidate members. To start, we’re sending newsletters that will keep these members, who are vital to our future, up-to-date on topics directly geared towards tomorrow’s vascular surgeons. The biweekly edition offers residents and students current information from the SVS, and the monthly edition addresses issues of importance to vascular trainees. Both newsletters will cover details on upcoming meetings and events — such as the Vascular Annual Meeting and the Vascular Research Initiatives Conference — awards and scholarships, open positions and much more. Subscribe to the newsletters and view past issues here.

Women’s Leadership Training Grant

Because leadership skills are integral to success but are not typically taught in medical school, the SVS Leadership Development and Diversity Committee offers the Women's Leadership Training Grant to help women sharpen their leadership skills. The $5,000 awards (offered at three levels of a woman's career) defray costs to attend leadership courses and activities. Applications are due March 1.

"Tranche" dates -- for completing all the paperwork for the Kai-Zen retirement accelerator program offered through the SVS Affinity Program of expanded benefits -- have been set for 2019. The first dates are Jan. 28, March 11 and May 6. Generally, paperwork can take approximately 30 or more days, but someone who has already started could meet the Jan. 28 date. Kai-Zen combines financing and life insurance, with premiums jointly funded by lenders and the participant (or an employer). It can help members speed investment growth in their life insurance policies, using leverage that provides up to 60 percent more death benefit protection and 60 percent more supplemental retirement income. This award is one of the most important opportunities for surgical trainees in vascular laboratories and includes the opportunity for the recipient to showcase his or her work in a podium presentation at the 2019 Vascular Annual Meeting. In addition, the recipient receives a $5,000 award. This year’s VAM is June 12 to 15 at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Md., outside of Washington, D.C. Find award details and guidelines here.

The SVS has a section dedicated solely to vascular physician assistants. All surgeons are encouraged to urge their PAs to join the section. This “professional home” for PAs has grown to 138 members in just one short year and more are always welcome. Benefits include PA-specific education at the Vascular Annual Meeting, leadership development, networking and mentoring opportunities, discounts on SVS events and our JVS subscription and more. Membership applications are processes quarterly. 2019 deadlines are March 1, June 1, Sep. 1 and Dec. 1. Learn more about the PA Section here.
